Obituary

Marcel Gregory David Myers was born on October 30, 1934 to Joseph David Myers and Lurline Veronica McDonald Myers in New York City. Raised in Harlem’s St. Nicholas Historic District, known colloquially as "Striver's Row", he was affectionately known as “Baby” to family and close friends. Gregory was the third of five siblings, Joseph, William, John and Lurline.

After graduating high school, Gregory joined the armed forces in 1958 and served during peacetime as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. After his military career, in the late 1960s he became a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officer serving with honor and pride and was decorated for being wounded in the line of duty. He ultimately rose through the ranks to detective receiving additional commendations along the way. He retired in 1991.

Gregory always had the latest tools and gadgets from the first motion picture camera, recording and sharing treasured moments with family and friends, to video game stations (Atari). To keep busy after retirement, he worked part-time at the Home Depot where he relished in sharing his knowledge of gizmos with customers.

In 1984, he met and later married Kyong N. (Kathy). They had a loving marriage for 35 years and enjoyed yearly trips to Juan Dolio, a small seaside community on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic.

Gregory loved spending time with his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. He was an avid chess player, enjoyed a good raucous game of poker and spades, watching war movies and fishing.

Gregory is survived by his beloved wife Kathy, daughters from his first marriage to Persis Myers Jacqueline Dorante and Gail Myers, son-in-law Billy Dorante; four grandchildren Julian Marcel and Alexandra Leigh Dorante, Jhana Mari and Christian Marcel Myers-Roach; his sister Lurline and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and other relatives; three step daughters Leann Pereira, Linda Pereira and Lisa Geurts, sons-in-law John Hogan, Antonio Pereira and Gregory Geurts; five grandchildren Prayag Das, Isabella and Lucas Pereira, Briahna and Kelsey Geurts, as well as close friends.

He peacefully passed away on December 18, 2020 at the age of 86 surrounded by Kathy and four of his daughters. We loved him dearly and he will be sorely missed.

A private family visitation will be held. Entombment will be on Wednesday December 23, 2020 at 10:00 AM at The Holy Cross Burial Park & MSLM located at 840 Cranbury South River Road Jamesburg, NJ 08831

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial donations be made to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
