Obituary

James Ernest Miller, 81, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020 at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC. James was born on January 30, 1939 in Rutherfordton, NC to the late Maggie Lee Carrier and Robert Miller. James was predeceased by his brother, Harold Bruce Carrier of Warrenton, Virginia.

James graduated from Carver High School in 1957. He attended Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC graduating in 1961 with a BA Degree in Sociology. He began his professional career at the Wiltwyck School for Boys in Esopus, NY, as a Child Care worker. He continued to work with youth as a Social Worker at Hillcrest Center for Children in Bedford Hills, NY and later at Highland Training School, Highland, NY. He returned to graduate school and in 1975 received his Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He began his employment with the Port Authority of NY & NJ. Following a productive, distinguished and rewarding work experience of 28 years he retired from his last position as Manager of the Newark Legal Center in Newark, NJ. in 1995.

He is a life member of Livingstone College Alumni Association. He is a member of Psi Beta Sigma Fraternity Upsilon Chapter. He served as President of the Bronx-Westchester Chapter of Livingstone Alumni and later as President of the Carver High School All Class Reunion. He thoroughly enjoyed sports and travelling.

Over the years James was a member of Jackson Memorial AME Zion Church in Hempstead, NY, First Presbyterian Church in Teaneck, NJ and later he joined the First United Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. when he moved in 2004. He was actively involved and served on the Board of Stewards, as an Elder, and as Trustee on the Session. He was willing to serve, to lead and to mentor whereever he could always with positive impact.

James , a loving husband, is survived by his wife, Priscilla, of Charlotte, NC. James and Priscilla were married for over 55 years. James leaves to cherish his memory, his sister, Phoebe Mackey of Mooresboro, NC; his brothers Muhammad, Robert and William Miller of Albany, NY; James Bruce Carrier and Jon Brown, nephews, and Tracie Carrier and Angela (Desmond) Gordon his nieces; his cousins Brenda Logan, Martha Sapp, Kaye Watkins (Edward), Raymond Hines (Donnie) ,Tommy Lynch (Sandra), Barry Hines (Wanda) Kenneth Hines (Vanessa) and Tyrone Lynch (Paulette), Eleanor Poole, Delores Martin, Bobby Rogers and Linda Smith. His God sons- Michael Torres and James Bond and a host of relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service is being planned for a later date.
