In Memory of
Joseph A. Lopes
April 1,
1942 - November 27, 2019
Obituary
Mr. Joseph Lopes passed away peacefully on November 27,
2019. He was 77 years old.
Joe was born and raised in New York City with his
brother Sal and mother Eleanor. He went on to serve in
the US Army and then began his career as a police
officer with the Port Authority of NY & NJ, before
marrying his wife, Marilyn. They started a family and
settled in Cranford, NJ shortly after.
He was proud of his years as an ordnance and payroll
clerk with the Army, and to be stationed amongst
America's best at Fort Bragg, NC. Over 25 years at the
Port Authority was the highlight of his career,
including achieving the rank of Detective. In his later
years, Joe cherished his time as the crossing guard at
St. Michael's School in Cranford.
Family and friendships were most important to Joe.
Morning coffee with his buddies in town, staying in
touch with guys from "the Port", and friendly
conversation with anyone that would listen was topped
only by time spent with his grandsons. Listening to
Oldies music was a longtime favorite.
Mr. Lopes was predeceased by his loving brother
Salvatore Lopes earlier this year. He is survived by his
wife of 48 years, Marilyn. He is also survived by his
son, Joseph, and daughter-in-law, Kimberly, and
grandsons, Joseph and Andrew.
Relatives and friends are invited to Joe's visitation on
Sunday, December 1, 2019 from 2-6pm at
Gray Memorial
Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Ave. in Cranford,
where his funeral service will begin at 10AM Monday
December 2, 2019. Interment will follow at Holy Name
Cemetery, Jersey City.
