Obituary
Albert Rubbert passed away after a brief illness
on February 9, 2018.
He is pre-deceased by his parents
Otto and Helen (nee Steinberg) and brother Otto and
niece Linda Fortman. He is survived by his beloved wife
of over 64 years Patricia (Burke) known to all as
"Beans". There are six surviving children, Bill (Diane)
Rick, Pati, Chris (Lisa), Kathy (Larry) and Ed (Elisa)
and several grandchildren including Devin and Edward
McGuinness, Melissa and Jessy Rubbert, Lauren Wells and
step grandchildren, Christina Gibson, Christy and
Michael Bamberger, David Wells, Marc and Mick Robbins.
Al was a phenomenal athlete at Cliffside Park H.S.
excelling in football, basketball, baseball and track.
He was known to go from the baseball field and then run
the 100 yd dash. He earned an athletic scholarship to
Muhlenberg College and played in the prestigious
National Invitation Tournament (NIT) which at the time
was more notable than the NCAA Tournament and March
Madness. He later played professional football and
basketball. He then served proudly in the Army
Paratroopers, 82nd Airborne. He then served in the
Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the early 50's as
an undercover operative in Eastern Europe.
He began a career in Public Transportation as the
General Manager in the Port Authority of NY & NJ during
the 1970's. Albert was one of the six Founding Fathers
of NJ Transit which became the model of public
transportation in the 1990's. As a high level executive
at all of his jobs he always had time to say "hi" and
"how are you" to receptionists, janitors and
secretaries, etc. He was not only a gentleman but a
"Gentle Man".
He was known by all as having a great sense of humor, a
smile for everyone and the life of the party. He and his
wife travelled extensively throughout their lives alone
and with good friends. He will be dearly missed by all
that were lucky enough to know him.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 am on
Wednesday, February 14 at St. Augustine's Church, 114 S.
Main Street, New City, NY. Burial will be in Frederick
Loescher Veterans Cemetery, New Hempstead.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, February 13th from 4 - 9
