Obituary
A former two-term Morris County freeholder elected in
the late 1970s died over the weekend in North Carolina.
She was 82 years old. Patricia J. "Pat" Maynard
had been battling ovarian cancer for nine years,
according to an announcement on the county government's
website.
Maynard, an Illinois native and 46-year Mendham Township
resident, moved in 2016 to North Carolina.
"Pat was a long time public servant and was passionate
about public service and helped to maintain and improve
the cultural and educational opportunities and the
quality of life in her many roles in Morris County,"
read the statement from the county government.
Maynard was elected to the Mendham Township Committee in
1974 and, in 1978, to the Morris County freeholder
board, whose most prominent member at that time was
future U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.
Frelinghuysen, R-11th District, was a county freeholder
from 1974 to 1983.
He issued a statement Wednesday on his former colleague.
"Pat Maynard was a longtime friend, mentor and
extraordinary public servant. Her service on the Board
of Freeholders led to new county parks, an excellent
police and fire academy and a stellar County College of
Morris," Frelinghuysen said.
"Her great sense of humor and good nature made all
county and state challenges surmountable. Along with
many others, I mourn her loss," Frelinghuysen said.
After leaving the freeholder board in 1984, Maynard
served as a legislative liaison to the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey for 12 years.
She played a role on Morris County's 9/11 memorial
committee and was a trustee for several organizations.
Funeral services are pending, according to the county
government announcement.
Maynard is survived by her husband of 62 years, Eugene;
two children and two grandchildren.
