Born in Burgas, Bulgaria, on March 8, 1930, the
young Dora embodied her Pisces sign - living, breathing
and swimming along the Black Sea. She followed her
father's profession as an architect, and learned the
joys of family and cooking from her mother. As a budding
professional, Dora oversaw the completion of several
cultural institution projects, including an opera house,
a beach resort and the restoration of a heritage site in
the ancient city of Nessebar.
It was on its golden sands that she met the love of her
life, Dorian Peter Morozov. Theirs was a
love-at-first-sight romance that would carry them their
entire 49 years together. With the rise of Communism in
the 1950s, they planned their escape to the United
States, leaving behind beloved family, friends and
colleagues with only two suitcases, their young
daughter, Polina, and the promise of a new life.
Soon after their arrival into New York City in 1965,
they settled in Verona, N.J., where the birth of their
second daughter, Petia, occurred and they were
established as new Americans. Dora quickly learned her
new language and explored a brief career in fashion
before entering into a 33-year tenure at The Port
Authority of New York and New Jersey as a senior
aviation architect and planner. Dora's greatest
accomplishment was the master plan for La Guardia
Airport, a project that would define her capacity to
handle many scales of infrastructure, politics and human
behavior. During that time, Dora and Dorian were always
scheming how to make their children's lives better than
their own; exploring their new country, learning new
skills, building with their hands, adapting to harsh
realities, hosting amazing parties, trying new cuisines,
and in general, imparting a spirit of adventure that
became their greatest gift to their family.
After losing Dorian in 2007, Dora made her grandchildren
the light of her life, showering them with unconditional
love, and completing her life's work to make their lives
easier than it had been for herself. After a long and
courageous battle with cancer, it was time for Dora to
re-unite with Dorian. Their loss, and those of their
generation, is immensely felt. Dora was many things
during her long life, but the love and devotion she had
for family and friends was central to who she truly was.
How we miss you so.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Dorian
Peter Morozov, Dora is survived by her daughters, Polly
Morozov-Bulajic and her husband, Vuk, and Petia Morozov;
grandchildren, Teddy and Anna Bulajic, and Niko Alcala;
brother, Vladimir Nikolov, his wife, Margarita, and her
nephew, Vilizar and his family.
