						Navy veteran of WWII, 
						
						retired 
						Port Authority chief engineer, great-grandfather Walter 
						L. Giordano, 91, of West Orange, N.J., gently passed on 
						Oct. 20, 2016. 
						
						
						
						The funeral service will be on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, 
						at 10 a.m. at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 
						Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J. Interment of ashes will 
						follow at Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover, N.J. 
						Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the 
						funeral home.

						Born in Raritan, N.J., Walter was a lifelong resident of 
						West Orange and graduated from West Orange High School 
						in 1941. 
						
						
						
						He attended Brown University and graduated from Tufts 
						University through the Naval V-12 program with an 
						engineering degree. He then served in the U.S. Navy 
						during World War II in the Pacific theater, attaining 
						the rank of first lieutenant. Following the war, Walter 
						worked at Western Electric, Kearny, N.J., where he met 
						his future wife, Anna Lombardi. 
						
						
						
						He then worked for The Port Authority of New York & New 
						Jersey from 1950 to 1988, retiring as chief engineer in 
						their bridges, tunnels, and terminals division. During 
						his time of employment, he attended Newark College of 
						Engineering at night, earning master's degrees in both 
						mechanical and management engineering. 
						
						
						
						Walter enjoyed over 60 summers in Lavallette, N.J., with 
						his family, and over 35 spring vacations on the west 
						coast of Florida. He was immersed in the lives of his 
						children and grandchildren, following sports and other 
						activities. 
						
						
						
						Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Anna 
						Giordano; his son, Larry and his wife, Deirdre; 
						daughter, Nancy; three grandchildren, Michael, Lauren, 
						and Jeffrey and his wife, Kristie; and his 
						great-granddaughter, Anna. He is also survived by many 
						nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. Walter was 
						predeceased by his sister, Betty Shaw.
