Obituary
Richard I. ("Dick") Strickland, 93, a resident at the
Cedar Crest retirement community of Pompton Plains, and
formerly a longtime resident of Glen Rock, died
peacefully with family at hospice on Sunday, March 22,
2015.
Dick was the son of Leland and Evelyn Grace Strickland
and was raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Graduating from
the University of Michigan in 1944, he held a lifelong
devotion to all things U of M – especially sports. He
served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Ruth McWilliams in 1949. They lived in Glen
Rock for almost 50 years, raising three children. He was
an active member of the Community Church of Glen Rock,
serving in the church school, consistory and missions.
He worked for the Port Authority of NY/NJ as a traffic
engineer for 41 years, retiring as Manager of the
Traffic Engineering Division.
Dick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He
is lovingly survived by his wife, Ruth; his son, David
Strickland and his wife Paula; his daughters, Kathryn R.
and her husband Craig Varjabedian and Patty and her
husband Mike Friedman; his grandchildren, Amy
Strickland, Sarah Strickland, Bailey Friedman, Rebekkah
Varjabedian, and Laura Friedman; and his nephew, Larry
Strickland.
A memorial service will be held April 19, 2015 at 1:30
pm at the Community Church, 354 Rock Rd.,Glen Rock. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial
Fund of Community Church of Glen Rock.
