Kevin Arthur Schafer (Arty)
1956 - January 29, 2015
Obituary
Obituary
Born in 1956. Lived in
Bay Ridge Brooklyn most of his life. Parents Arthur
(retired NYPD officer) and Janet.
Kevin graduated from
Bishop Ford HS in 1974. Classmates included John Ryan
and Kevin Devlin. PAPD academy February 1986 to June
1986. (87th class) Prior to becoming a cop, Kevin was a
mortician and very proud of getting through mortuary
school.
Our first command was the
Holland Tunnel, then the pool, then NIA command. We
commuted together in the academy and he was often late
which drove me crazy. He bought a house in Somerset NJ,
but he was always in Brooklyn helping his parents or his
Aunt Lucille.
Because Kevin did not
speak in a linear fashion, and skipped from topic to
topic, I had a hard time keeping up with him. As told to
me by a a Lt. who shall remain nameless, Kevin often
wavered between answering the emergency line or biting
into a sub. He also reminded me of the time Kevin's off
duty gun got wedged into his car roof rack and made it
from New Jersey to Brooklyn and stayed in place until
his found it the next day.
He loved and was devoted
to his parents. He loved Barbara. He laughed
easily and often. He was kind and generous. He would
give you the shirt off his back. He was never angry or
nasty with anyone. He was my first friend at the PAPD,
and we remained friends for 29 years. I loved him,
laughed with him and will never forget him.
