						Obituary
						
						
						
						Michael Joseph McGovern, 85, passed away Sunday (October 
						25, 2015) at his home in Edison. Born and raised in 
						Jersey City, he lived in Edison since 1956. He also 
						maintained a summer home in Lavallette.
						
						Mr. McGovern served in Korea with the US Army from 1951 
						to 1953 and received three bronze stars for his service. 
						He worked for the Port Authority of NY & NJ for 38 years 
						and was a recipient of the Howard Cullman Award for 
						outstanding and distinguished public service, before 
						retiring from the NJ Marine Terminals division in 1989 
						as Chief Maintenance Supervisor.
						
						He was a member of the Port Authority Retired Employees 
						Association; Edison AARP #3346; Knights of Columbus 
						#3639; the Fanwood Scotch Plains YMCA; and the Y Square 
						Dance Club.
						
						He was predeceased by his parents James and Sabina 
						McGovern; his brothers, James, Lawrence and William; and 
						his son-in-law, Guy Gebler. He is survived by his loving 
						wife of 60 years, Irene Fletcher McGovern; his sons, 
						Michael J. McGovern II (wife Lilian), James (soulmate 
						Steffie) and Timothy (wife Siobhan); his daughter, 
						Kathleen Gebler; 12 grandchildren, Michael J. McGovern 
						III, Monica, Sean, Timothy, Nicole, Allison, Helene, 
						Megan, Andrew, Shannon, Colleen and Kelly; 7 
						great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Arlene, Patricia 
						and Carolyn; daughter-in-law, Laurie; and many nieces, 
						nephews and friends.
						
						The funeral will be from Memorial Funeral Home, 155 
						South Ave., Fanwood, on Thursday (October 29th) at 9 AM 
						followed by a 10 AM funeral Mass at St. Helena's R.C. 
						Church, 930 Grove Ave., Edison. Visitation will be 
						Wednesday from 3PM to 8PM at the funeral home. In lieu 
						of flowers, donations may be made to Vitas Hospice.
