Alice Mary Russhon
Dickerson, 94, died peacefully on April 14,2015, at
Brittney Pointe Estates with her loving husband John J.
Dickerson at her bedside. Alice was born June 7. 1920,
to George Russhon, Jr. and Alice Roberta Carr Russhon.
She was raised in Leonia, NJ, and attended local
schools, graduating from Leonia HS in 1938. Alice
graduated from New Jersey College for Women, Class of
1942, now Douglass College, Rutgers University with a
degree in art. She remained a supportive alumna
throughout her lifetime and was proud to attend her 70th
reunion in 2012.
Following her graduation, she was employed by the Bendix
Corporation as one of the first female draftswomen
supporting the WWII effort. During this time, she fell
in love with a fellow Leonia HS graduate and young WWII
pilot, John J. Dickerson, Jr. They married shortly after
his honorable discharge from the Army Air Corps, and
started a life together that would last over 69 years .
The young couple moved to Palisades Park NJ and raised a
family of five children. Alice taught art and painted,
and John began a career with the Port Authority of NY
and NJ that included many years as General Manager of
Newark Airport.
In addition to raising
her children and caring for her family and extended
family, Alice was a talented watercolor artist, a
skilled seamstress, a beautiful quilter, and an active
member and volunteer in her church. She was a fun
loving, active participant in life and a constant
companion, soul mate and helper to her husband John. She
spent many happy summers at Lindy Lake in West Millford,
NJ, with her family. In later years, John and Alice
moved to Pennington NJ and spent 16 years enjoying
retirement in a more rural setting. She was a resident
of Brittney Pointe Estates for her final 15 years.
Survivors include her
beloved husband, John J. Dickerson, her children Barbara
Closs (Richard) of Harvard, MA, Kathleen Jascott (Ron)
of Plano, TX, John E. Dickerson (Laurie) of Belvidere
NJ, and George R. Dickerson (Sohelia) of Wallingford,
CT. Another daughter, Ellen Marie Dickerson, predeceased
her in 2007. In addition, Alice is survived by 11
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, her
brother-in-law, Robert W. Dickerson of Portland, ME, and
7 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister,
Roberta Spencer, and her sister-in-law, Doris Jachens.
The family would like to thank the Staff at Willow Brook
Court for their gentle care of Alice in her last months
and their consideration to allow John to spend as much
time with her as possible. The family also thanks
Abington Hospice and Home Care for assisting Alice and
her family to the end.
