                        STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Longtime Staten Islander, 
                        Ruth A. Flanagan, 89, of Port Richmond, a retired 
                        operations supervisor, who was a loving mother and 
                        grandmother, died Monday in Richmond University Medical 
                        Center, West Brighton. 
                        
                        Born Ruth Welsh in Philadelphia, Pa., she moved to 
                        Queens in 1947 and settled in Port Richmond in 1950. 
                        
                        Mrs. Flanagan worked for over 25 years, starting out as 
                        a toll collector for the Port Authority of New York and 
                        New Jersey and retiring as an operations supervisor in 
                        1988. 
                        
                        In her later years, Mrs. Flanagan earned a bachelor of 
                        arts degree in English from the College of Staten 
                        Island. She was in the first class to graduate from the 
                        college, which was created when Staten Island Community 
                        College and Richmond College merged. 
                        
                        Mrs. Flanagan was active in her grandchildren’s school, 
                        serving as an officer of the St. Adalbert’s Mother’s 
                        Club in Elm Park, and by being a grandparent volunteer 
                        librarian at Our Lady of Good Counsel School, 
                        Tompkinsville. 
                        
                        She was an avid reader who enjoyed painting and spending 
                        time with her family and dear friends. 
                        
                        She was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, 
                        West Brighton. 
                        
                        Her husband of 36 years, John (Pat), died in 1986. 
                        
                        Surviving are her son, John (Jack); six daughters, Anne 
                        Flanagan, Ellen Flanagan, Patricia Flanagan, Kathleen 
                        Flanagan, Maureen Flanagan and Denise Burns, and six 
                        grandchildren. 
                        
                        The funeral will be Friday from the Harmon Home for 
                        Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in 
                        Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will follow in 
                        Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
