Thomas
F. Donovan died peacefully in his sleep on January 20,
2013 at the age of 87. Tom was the loving
spouse of Caryl(nee Lewin), father of James P.(Linda),
Thomas C.(Rhonda), Maureen( John), Daniel J.(Denny),
Diane M., Richard F. and Elizabeth A.(Jerry L) and
grandfather to thirteen wonderful grandchildren.
Born in the borough of Brooklyn on June 10, 1925, Tom
attended St. Patricks School and Cathedral Preparatory
Seminary in Bay Ridge and was a cum laude graduate of
The College of the Holy Cross and the Fordham University
School of Law. Tom and his family have been residents of
Garden City, New York for more than fifty years.
Tom completed his higher education after service with
the Merchant Marine during World War II. Upon graduation
from Holy Cross, Tom began his lifelong career with the
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He was
admitted to the New York State Bar in 1955.
Beginning as an assistant, Tom progressed through many
management positions to ultimately become the General
Manager of Rentals and Development for the newly built
World Trade Center. In this capacity, Tom was
responsible for acquiring tenants and negotiating leases
for the millions of square feet represented in the Twin
Towers. He received many awards for his service to the
Port Authority, including The Award of Achievement and
the Distinguished Service Medal
A very devout man, Tom was a daily communicant and
contributor to his local parish of St. Joseph's in
Garden City and served as a member of the board of
Catholic Charities 1984- 2000.
An avid reader, inveterate world traveler, appreciator
of intellect and lover of his family he will be deeply
missed by both his family and friends.
Visitation for Tom was held at Fairchild and Sons
Funeral Home on Wednesday January 23rd. A funeral mass
was held at St. Joseph's Church on Thursday January 24.
Burial was private.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers,
contributions in Tom's name be made to Catholic
Charities 90 Cherry Lane, Hicksville, NY 11801.
