Richard J. Banks Sr., 67

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Richard J. Banks Sr., 67, of Bloomingdale, a devoted family man and a retired general maintainer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, died Saturday at home.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, he attended Aviation High School in Queens.

Mr. Banks served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969, stationed aboard an aircraft carrier and traveling to many European and other countries.

After his return from military service, he and Lucille Salvia were married. The family moved to Graniteville in 1975, and settled in Bloomingdale in 1995.

Mr. Banks worked as a general maintainer for the Port Authority for 20 years. He retired five years ago.

He most loved spending time with his family and doted on his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed bowling, shooting pool, swimming and fishing.

Mr. Banks often attended Church of the Gateway with his wife.

Surviving, along with Lucille, his wife of 44 years, are his son, Richard Jr.; his daughters, Doreen Babilonia, Nicole Rice and Lisa Eng; his mother, Florence Banks; a brother, Robert; a sister, Joyce Jenzen, and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, Pleasant Plains. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
