Bernard J. Sloan, 85, husband of the late 
								Helen (Callaghan) Sloan, died Sept. 15, at home. 
								A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 
								a.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, at the Immaculate 
								Conception Church, 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville, 
								N.J. Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 
								to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Cusick 
								Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somerville.
								
								
								
								
Bernard 
								was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was so proud of 
								it. He later became a resident of Somerville, 
								N.J., for 50 years. He was the manager of Port 
								Newark Marine Terminals for the Port Authority 
								of NY/NJ , retiring after a 40-year career. A 
								Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the 
								Philippines during their liberation. He received 
								his BS and MBA from New York University. Barney, 
								as he was fondly known, was an Irish Catholic 
								through and through having been a steadfast 
								parishioner at the Immaculate Conception Church 
								in Somerville. He was a charter member of the 
								Ancient Order of Hibernians, where he once 
								served as the grand marshal for the AOH parade 
								in Somerville. He was also a life member of the 
								Somerville Elks and the Knights of Columbus.
								
								
								He 
								devoted many hours to various charitable 
								organizations and community events. Barney had 
								many friends and was well-known for his wit and 
								generosity. He was predeceased by his sisters, 
								Patricia Farrell and Marie Cassidy. Surviving 
								are his children, Bernard (wife Jeannine), 
								Maureen Kennedy (husband Bob), Peter (wife 
								Mary), Hugh (wife Kathy), and Eileen Colangelo 
								(husband Ron); his grandchildren, Matthew, 
								Katie, Brian, Alli, Megan, Nick, Steven and 
								Shannon; a brother, Thomas Sloan (wife Helen), 
								and many nieces and nephews.
