						YVONNE S. SIX

HAMPTON
						- Yvonne Six of Hampton, Va., passed away peacefully on
						June 9, 2010, after courageously battling chronic
						illness. Yvonne fought as she lived her life, with
						dignity and determination.  Yvonne was born June
						29, 1937, in New York, N.Y., to the late Julia Hastings
						and Charles Satterfield.

						She attended Catholic school and
						then earned her degree in Aviation Management at Adelphi
						University in New York. Yvonne began her distinguished
						31-year career working for the Port Authority of New
						York and New Jersey, as one of the first female toll
						booth collectors at the Lincoln tunnel. Yvonne's career
						continued its meteoric rise with her appointment to the
						position 9/9 supervisor. She holds the distinction of
						being the first black female to hold that position as
						well as the highest ranking female supervisor in Port
						Authority history.
						She was preceded in death by her
						sister, Connie Brown; and two very close cousins,
						Fredonia Stapleton and Yolanda Drayton.
						Yvonne will be forever remembered by her loving son,
						David Six and wife, Angela; daughter, Dorinda Henderson;
						brother, Alvin Satterfield and wife, Geraldine;
						grandson, Kyle Six; granddaughters, Keisha
						McCormick-Sanford, Mia McCormick, Joycelyn Davis;
						great-grandchildren, Tyler Frazier and Cheniya Sanford;
						sisters-in-law, Hallie Allen and Bessie Black; nieces,
						nephews, cousins and countless other family and friends
						who were blessed to know her.
						Yvonne was known for her quick
						wit, her dedication to youth, church, Hampton High
						School basketball and later Hampton University. Yvonne
						or "Mama Six," as she was known to many young basketball
						players, could be found on the sideline with her rosary
						in hand when her team was struggling. There were many
						times that her Hail Mary's lifted her team to victory.
						The family would like to thank Kim
						Smith and Derek Bacote, for the unconditional love and
						support you showed our mother.
						Family and friends are invited to a viewing one hour
						prior to the funeral Mass. Funeral Mass will be at 1
						p.m. June 12, 2010, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic
						Church, 230 33rd Street, Newport News, VA 23607.
						Interment will take place in Forrest Green Cemetery in
						New Jersey. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of
						arrangements. View and post condolences on our online
						guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
