Dear Friends
My apologies for using Email, but it's the most
efficient way to reach you at this point. I know you
will understand.
For those who have not yet heard, I write to share the
sad news of Mike's death last week during our vacation
in Santa Fe. We had a glorious day of skiing the spring
snows at Taos, marveling at the dark blue sky and the
vast New Mexico landscape.
That night Mike
apparently suffered a stroke, fell, and cracked his
skull on the stone floor. I found him in the morning
still breathing but unconscious. He was operated on to
remove a large subdural clot but extensive hemorrhages
throughout the brain had caused irreversible brain
damage. He never regained consciousness and died
peacefully Saturday, March 30. Mike's daughter Sarah and
I were at his bedside.
After a 21-years of sharing our lives, it is yet
difficult for me to comprehend the enormous loss and to
begin to come to terms with it. I deeply appreciate your
thoughts and wishes and thank you very much for your
many expressions of sympathy.
My son, Peter, has brought me to Boulder, CO, to spend
time with him, Mitzi, and my darling twin
granddaughters, Julia and Isabel. I intend to return to
Washington later this month.
Plans for a Washington memorial service in May are
underway. As soon as arrangements have been finalized,
I'll send details.
Some of you have inquired about Mike's favorite
charities. As you know well, he was an ardent activist
for several progressive causes, and was deeply involved
in the Obama campaign. His favorite Washington
organization was DC for Democracy. As many of you also
know, Mike was a life-long environmentalist and out-door
enthusiast. After our back packing trip into the
Escalante Wilderness in Southern Utah he began to
support an NGO fighting to protect this incredible
natural treasure from Bush inspired encroachments.

Any donation to either of the two organizations will
honor Mike in a very special way. Thank you again for
your many kindnesses and support during this difficult
time. I shall be forever grateful.
In deep sorrow,
Irmgard
