STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Richard F. Schemichen, 78, 
						of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., a former Eltingville 
						resident and Marine veteran, died Sunday at home. 
						Mr. Schemichen was born in New Haven, Conn., and was 
						brought to Brooklyn as a child.  
						
						He joined the U.S. Marines after high school and served 
						for eight years, rising to the rank of sergeant and 
						drill instructor. He served between 1948 and 1957 and 
						was stationed at Parris Island, S.C.; Barstow, Calif.; 
						Guam, and Washington, D.C. 
						
						Mr. Schemichen then moved to Eltingville and worked for 
						Consolidated Edison for 13 years. He then became a 
						construction inspector for the Port Authority of New 
						York and New Jersey, and retired in 1989. Mr. Schemichen 
						moved to Little Egg Harbor in 1997. 
						
						He was recalled as a friendly and outgoing man who had 
						many friends, and enjoyed taking gambling trips to 
						Atlantic City. 
						His first wife of 18 years, the former Angela Sicignano, 
						died in 1974. 
						His daughter, Elaine, died shortly after her birth in 
						1956. 
						Surviving are his second wife of 19 years, the former 
						Barbara Buchanan; two sons, Richard and Paul Schemichen; 
						a daughter, Kristie Schemichen; two sisters, Clara Manne 
						and Eleanor Romano, and two grandchildren. 
						
						The funeral service will be held tonight at 8 p.m. in 
						the 
						
						John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville. 
						Arrangements include cremation.
