George J. Oravetz Port
Authority mechanical engineer, WWII vet, 97 George J.
Oravetz, 97, of Short Hills passed away at home on
Sunday, July 13, 2008. A Mass of Christian Burial will
be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, Short Hills,
on Wednesday, July 16, at 10 a.m.
A visitation will be held
prior to the Mass at Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral
Home, 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, starting at 8:30.
Interment following the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery,

Born in Irvington, Mr.
Oravetz moved to Short Hills in 1967. He was a
mechanical engineer employed by the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey in New York City for 10 years,
retiring in 1976. Mr. Oravetz was a graduate of Stevens
Institute of Technology in Hoboken, where he received
his mechanical engineering degree, and he also attended
the Newark College of Engineering.
He served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II and was a member of the Society
of Automotive Engineering. Mr. Oravetz was predeceased
by his wife, Catherine Kay ONeil Oravetz. He is survived
by his step-children, John R. and his wife, Elisa ONeil,
and Sharon C. ONeil, and step-grandchildren, Jonathon
and Jessica ONeil.
