John F. Kane,
Sr. June 4,
2007
John F. Kane, Sr. of New
Rochelle died suddenly on June 2, 2007 after a brief
illness. He was 82. John was born in Chicago, IL on
November 20, 1924 to Joseph P. and Marie Kane. He had
two brothers, Joseph and Thomas, and a sister Patricia.
John attended St. Bede Academy in Peru, IL where he
began his football career and earned the nickname "The
Gentle Giant"- as he would gently place his opponents on
the ground.
In 2005 he was the first
to be inducted into the St. Bede Academy Hall of Fame.
He attended Purdue University and then enlisted in the
US Navy. He was stationed in the Pacific on the
destroyer USS Caldwell and resigned his commission as
LTJG. Upon his return to Chicago he met Shirley M.
Simmons and they were married May 1, 1948. Shortly after
the birth of their son John Jr. they moved to New
York. John finished his education at NYU with a degree
in engineering. At that time he was signed to play pro
ball with the Detroit Lions but his career was short
lived due to a devastating knee injury. John worked for
many companies involved in pollution control in the
steel and oil industries including Petro Chem, Chemico,
and Envirotech.
He and his family enjoyed
many years at Bonnie Briar Country Club and after the
birth of their daughter, Victoria they moved to New
Rochelle. John enjoyed traveling and his business took
him to Japan, Venezuela, Canada, and Pittsburgh, PA. He
eventually worked for General Electric and for the New
Jersey Port Authority as a consulting engineer. He was
one of the primary engineers for the monorail system
currently in place at JFK.
He and his family enjoyed
vacationing out west, skiing, horseback riding, white
water rafting, camping, and when there was time a round
of golf at Wykagyl Country Club where they have enjoyed
their membership for the past 30 years. Mr. Kane is
survived by his daughter, Victoria Kane, sisters-in-law,
Laura Simmons and Margaret Kane, daughter-in-law, Judith
Kane and two grandchildren, Thrine and Sean Kane. He is
pre-deceased by his son, John F. Kane, Jr. and his wife
Shirley and his siblings. We offer special thanks and
love to his constant caregiver for the last year, Osei
Tutu. John's dry sense of humor, appetite for life and
food, especially his sweet tooth, will forever keep him
in our hearts.

Beauchamp Chapel, 16 Shea Pl. New Rochelle, NY. A
