Frederick Hurst

Lifelong Staten Islander Frederick V. Hurst Jr. of Randall Manor, a supervising analyst and World War II veteran, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. He was 81.

A graduate of Wagner College -- he also earned 2002 a master's degree in mathematics from the Grymes Hill school -- Mr. Hurst worked as a supervising analyst at the Port Authority in Manhattan for 40 years. He retired in 1991.

Mr. Hurst served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army's 17th Replacement Company from 1943 to 1946, stationed mostly in France and Germany.

A member of the Staten Island Power Squadron for more than 40 years, he had a passion for the outdoors, especially for sailing and boating. Mr. Hurst also liked to lecture as part of the public boating course, according to his family.

He had the kind of dry wit and humor that made everybody laugh, said his wife of 34 years, the former Rosa Sipl.

Born in Great Kills, Mr. Hurst settled in Randall Manor in 1966. He was a member of New Dorp Moravian Church.

In addition to his wife, surviving are his two sons, Paul and Andrew.

The funeral service was to be today at 8 p.m. in Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. Arrangements included cremation.
